Stargate Atlantis takes the knowledge learned putting together the award winning Stargate: SG-1 television show over it’s ten year run and takes what works best about the series, the dynamic group of characters, alien technology, new worlds, new problems and new villains. Now it it’s forth series and bringing Amanda Tapping in as Samantha Carter to run the Atlantis Expedition after the demise of Torri Higginson’s Dr. Elizabeth Weir, Stargate Atlantis maintains the wonderful balance of humour, drama and high production qualities. While it may not have the adult appeal of Battlestar Galactica, it’s far more accessible and appropriate for younger audiences.
Stargate’s mythology borrows from practically source it can find without regret; this includes the Greek mythology of Atlantis. In Stargate lore, Atlantis was a city built by the ancients long ago and then submerged and abandoned when the ancients, for all their technological sophistication lost a war against the Wraith, a hybrid species of ancient DNA and a parasitic bug. At the beginning of the series the multinational team lead by Higginson’s Dr. Weir and Joe Flanigan’s Colonel Sheppard, manage to raise the city to sea level and make contact with the local inhabitants of a planet under Wraith attack, picking up Rachel Luttrell's Teyla Emmagan as the fourth member of the primary team.
This team resembles the composition of SG-1’s team, with the military leader being Colonel Shepard, backed up by the brilliant but eccentric and neurotic Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) the alien tough guy Ronin Dex (Jason Momoa) Teyla Emmagan as a more diplomatic character. However, the rest of the base personal get significant attention as well, though it’s not always good for their health.
The cast and crew of Atlantis have received many awards, including the Platinum Award for best directing (David Winning), the Writer’s Guild of Canada’s Showrunner award for Brad Wright, People’s Choice Favourite Sci-Fi Show and many other awards. This is the result of David Winning’s direction and the team that they’ve pulled together to make the show work and their ability to hit the ground running and keep going.
The current (fourth) season takes Atlantis to a new world after a preemptive attack on the Replicators – a threat originally introduced in Stargate: SG-1 - starts and escalating war. Forced to abandon their original planet, Atlantis faces new threats and new opportunities as they continue to explore the Pegasus Galaxy. New cast members are introduced, the aforementioned Amanda Tapping’s cross over from Stargate: SG-1 and Jewel Staite from Firefly are regular members. Other actors from Stargate: SG-1 also make appearances, including Gary Jones’ Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman and Richard Dean Anderson’s Major General Jack O’Neill.
